Asus ROG Strix G15 review (2022): The gaming laptop poster is back

The Asus ROG Strix series has been a popular choice in the gaming laptop segment for a while, which is why things are exciting with each new release. How do you improve a product that pretty much ticks all the games check boxes? Yes, there are newer specs, but is that it?

I’ve been trying the Asus ROG Strix G15 2022 for over a week, and here is my full review of the laptop.

Asus ROG Strix G15 2022 Specifications: AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX | Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti 8GB GPU | 1TB SSD + 16GB DDR5 RAM | 15.6-inch QHD 165Hz display | 90 watt battery |

Asus ROG Strix G15 2022: What is the good?

design

Yes, Asus ROG has been designing very exciting games for a while now, but the ROG Strix G15 still manages to feel like a breath of fresh air. An asymmetrical display panel design, per-key RGB lighting, a satisfying hinge and smaller details throughout the body all add up to give this device a uniquely affordable feel from the moment you unbox the first time.

It’s also designed like a tank and every inch of the gaming laptop feels absolutely premium. There are elements like the glowing ROG logo on the lid and RGB lighting under the belly on the user-facing side of the laptop, both of which add to make sure this is a head-turning tool if you ever turn the laptop on. office, in a public place or among your friends.

Despite the loudness in the ‘built for gaming’ ambiance, the ROG Strix G15 2022 manages to stay on the compact and portable side, as far as gaming laptops in this class are concerned. You really get the best looking players here, without the huge compromises that usually come with them.

Show

Our variant of the Asus ROG Strix G15 2022 comes with a 15.6-inch QHD (2K) IPS LCD display with a refresh rate of 165Hz. The show is simply amazing. It has great viewing angles, and it hits a good spot between resolution and refresh rate. This means you’ll enjoy gaming on this laptop whether you like enjoying the beautiful landscapes of Mexico in 2K with Forza Horizon 5, or if you want a high refresh rate and fast responses in fps titles like Valorant or PUBG: Battlegrounds.

You also get Dolby Atmos Vision, which overlaps with 2K resolution which means you can enjoy a great movie on this device too when you’re not playing games. For those who just want more refresh rate and don’t care about games above 1080p, the laptop also comes with a 1080p FHD+ display with a 300Hz refresh rate variable. However, I think the 2K + 165Hz variant would be the best and most versatile option for most gamers.

keyboard

The Asus ROG Strix 2022 also comes with a nice keyboard. It looks great, thanks to per-key RGB, and also has well-spaced keys with plenty of travel. The arrow keys, which are sometimes quite rectangular and hard to get right for people with larger thumbs and fingers, are big enough here too. The keyboard is comfortable to use not only for gaming but also for longer typing tasks like lengthy articles.

There’s no number pad on the right here, but instead you get dedicated media and other quick controls on the top and right, which makes more sense for the target audience of this laptop. This includes play, pause, and previous and next keys on the right which are really useful when consuming media.

performance (and heat)

Coming to performance, the ROG Strix G15 2022 doesn’t unsurprisingly disappoint. AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti mobile combine well to give you a great gaming experience in 1080p or 1440p. The company also added a new MUX switch that allows users to route the monitor’s output exclusively from the discrete GPU rather than through the integrated graphics when necessary, giving the 3070 Ti’s best capabilities.

I managed to get frame rates around 80-85 fps in Forza Horizon 5 at 1440p and 80-90 fps in God of War, again at 1440p. Trying out FIFA 22 at 1080p I was able to get between 190-210 fps. The laptop got warm after a while of gaming, but didn’t get uncomfortably hot, and the keyboard remained usable even after long hours of gaming.

I/O, Communication and Shipping

The laptop offers a good mix of I/O ports as well. You have two USB 3.2 Type-C ports on the back, along with an HDMI port and an RJ45 port, next to the power port. On the left are two USB 2.0 ports along with a 3.5mm headphone port.

The laptop also supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. Note that there is no dedicated MicroSD card slot here, so if you’re a creative, you may need to get an adapter. Also, USB Type C ports are not Thunderbolt ports either.

The laptop comes with a large 280W charging adapter. This charger tops out a laptop in about two hours, and while USB-C charging is also supported, it’s limited to 100W.

Asus ROG Strix G15 2022: What is not good?

The Asus ROG Strix doesn’t get much wrong with its price, but one factor that can still deceive some people is the lack of a built-in webcam. I assumed Asus still thought webcams weren’t really necessary on dedicated gaming hardware like this, but the addition would have made this package really complete. On the bright side, the company bundles an external FHD webcam in the box, but that’s still not as smooth as the built-in solution, and it takes up the USB port.

Battery life isn’t the best either, which is understandable given the device’s performance-hungry nature. Users can manage between 5-9 hours of battery life for daily tasks, while games kill battery in just over an hour. However, this should not be too important because you will be connected for the best gaming performance in Turbo mode.

Verdict: Is the Asus ROG Strix G15 right for you?

ROG Strix series gaming laptops were also easy recommendations for striking a great balance between performance, ergonomics, and aesthetics. The ROG Strix G15 is no different and excels in everything synonymous with the Strix series, now working even better with AMD’s new Ryzen 6000 chip inside. However, if you’re looking to upgrade from an earlier Strix series device, I’d suggest you wait because while there’s a performance boost, minor issues like no built-in webcam and average battery life are still here.
