Lawmakers across the country are proposing a temporary suspension of state gas taxes to ease the pain at the pump from the recent rise in gas prices, and drivers in some states could see significant savings.

More than 20 states as of Wednesday introduced legislation that would create a “gas holiday” — a pause in gas taxes — or temporarily lower the tax rate, according to data from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Drivers can save an average of $4 each time they fill up their gas tanks as a result of these layoffs, according to an NBC News analysis of state proposals.

Connecticut lawmakers voted to suspend their state’s gas tax Wednesday, joining Georgia and Maryland who enacted similar measures last Friday. New Jersey and Maine lawmakers announced plans to introduce similar legislation.

Temporary savings from shows can save about $6.64 on gas for a California compact car, which is taxed at about 68 cents a gallon, when all taxes are accounted for. In Maryland, which has temporarily discontinued the gas tax of 36 cents per gallon, you can save up to $13 at the pump for a truck.

The revenue loss could leave gaps in state budgets, but the price cuts have attracted support from lawmakers on both sides as the average price of gas has risen to about $4.24 a gallon, According to AAAformerly the American Automobile Association.
