The weekend wraps up Coachella with the Swedish house mafia

As if it didn’t take long to get to the 21st installment of Coachella – what with the pandemic, four postponements and another new rise for Covid – when Kanye West’s original Sunday headlines pulled out two weeks ago, Swedish House Mafia had to transform their vaguely defined position On the lineup to a group of addresses. In no time, The Weeknd—still deep in the work on his co-produced, co-produced and co-stars HBO series “The Idol”—has agreed to elevate his pre-planned short appearance with the EDEM Titans to a headlining spot with theirs, But he only had two weeks to put together a set. However, the man known as Abel Tesfaye is nothing if not up for a challenge, and he didn’t disappoint as he wrapped up the co-starring festival, which was set for late Sunday night (actually Monday morning).

Described as “Swedish House Mafia x the Weeknd”, the group was essentially split in half, with the former opening and roaring through a tight repertoire of their own, then briefly performing with The Weeknd for a few more recent songs. They released them together, then gave him up on stage for a huge, tight mix of his songs, from world smash hits like “Blinding Lights”, “I Can’t Feel My Face” and “Starboy” to his poetry in high-profile collaborations like his songs with Kanye West, Drake, Future, Ty Dolla $ign (who were not present), “Hurricane”, “Crew Love”, “Low Life” and “Or Nah” respectively.

Swedish House Mafia opened the show under a giant open circle resembling something from “Independence Day”, as the group opened with a powerful mix of their songs, accompanied by giant shades of white light, fog and spotlights. Trio Axwell paraphrased Jay-Z, shouting “Please allow us to reintroduce ourselves!” Then they did just that while the three swayed from behind a giant DJ stand, stopping occasionally for tips like “Coachella! We’re Swedish House Mafia!,” “Coachella! Are you ready?” and “Coachella! Make some noise!” About 50 minutes later, the tune changed, and one sample of Weeknd’s voice simply saying “Ahh” was combined, and he appeared on the riser in the center of the giant circle, singing a remix of “Sacrifice” by segueing to “How Do I Make You Love Me?”

Dressed in a black T-shirt, army jacket, and baggy pants and boots, the weekend flew into a huge mix of songs that made one realize how many songs he had (his playlist is shown below). The Swedish House Mafia then vacated the stage and The Weeknd spent much of the group singing from the hallways that spilled into the crowd; He actually sang “Coachella!” and “How are you here?” and “I can’t hear you!” , instead of the usual screaming we’ve heard hundreds of times over the end of the long weekend being broadcast live.

In the middle of the group he shouted “We just started!” (Resulting in at least one comedic backlash on the East Coast):

Leading the vocals in “I Can’t Feel My Face” and “Blindness of Lights,” he slipped back into the “The Hills” catalog, and exclaimed, “It took so long but we’re finally here – we’ve made it!” He was probably referring to his late addition to the lineup by saying, “Coachella! I’m always here for you, I support you.”

After capping his single “I Feel It Coming” on “Save Your Tears”, he returned to the main stage and Swedish House Mafia was back behind the floors to seal the song “Moth to a Flame”, however, around 2 a.m. local time, 5 a.m. local time. And they’ll be doing it again for the second part of the 2022 Coachella Festival, next weekend…
