It’s not TV, but our list of what’s new on HBO Max for May 2022 makes us confident thinking that the best streaming service will keep the crown ahead. Sure, HBO Max might not have nearly the large list of new releases you get from a particular competitor (check out what’s new on Netflix while you’re here), but the service seems to maintain its quality on the pattern of the amount going through the month of spring.
We’re calling HBO Max the best streaming player because while its May 2022 debut is solid—Jean Smart is back for Hacks’ second season while Tony Collette and Colin Firth collaborate on The Staircase—it shows in April that we love we’re still going. This means that if you want to watch more Barry season 3, Made For Love Season 2, and The Flight Attendant Season 2 (and don’t wait until the seasons are over), you’ll keep going.
Furthermore, they also had a two-part George Carlin documentary, The Michael Che Show Returns, and Stephen Moffat’s adaptation of the Time Traveler’s Wife.
New to HBO Max: Editors’ Recommendations
Hacks season 2
Jan Smartess keeps on coming as Hacks (one of the best HBO Max shows you probably haven’t seen yet) returns to make a scene. The sophomore season of the dark comedy series finds veteran Deborah Vance (Smart) off tape and on the road with her younger writer Ava (Hannah Einbender). The two don’t have a good relationship yet – as you can see in the trailer, Deborah enjoys throwing things at Ava in public – but the sparring between them will continue. And that’s the point. Ava gained Deborah’s attention by talking to her and pushing her, and now they’re going to be testing new materials across the country.

True crime fans get a lot from Netflix and even Hulu, so we’re not surprised that one of the biggest new HBO Max titles in May is the “ripped from the headlines” genre. This limited series focuses on the life of Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) and the death of his wife Kathleen (Tony Collette). While Kathleen’s death has been blamed on a freak fall, all indications are that Michael took her life. It seems like everyone in the neighborhood has a story about their relationship, and Michael is doing his best to dodge the allegations.
