Singaporean lawyer Samuel Sue banned from practicing law after assaulting staff

Prominent Singaporean entertainment lawyer Samuel Soe Thing Ping has lost his license to practice law after a court ruled on Wednesday that he should be barred due to a series of assaults on his staff.

Sou, who heads the namesake Samuel Souw Law Corporation and talent management company Beam Artistes, had previously pleaded guilty to eight counts of assault from the Singapore Law Association between March and April 2019.

The Law Society subsequently recommended that action be taken by the Court of Three, the highest body of the legal profession. So now faces criminal charges over the same incidents.

In a written ruling, the court said: “It is clear that a reasonable person would say, without hesitation, that he is a lawyer [Souw] Not doing what he did. His misconduct tarnishes his reputation as a lawyer and tarnishes the reputation of the legal profession as a whole.”

Singaporean media reported that Souw poked and pushed an event executive’s face. After being handcuffed by others in the office, including his niece, Sue was released and repeatedly slapped his niece’s face, before hitting another woman on the arm.

On other occasions, Sue reportedly threw files, boxes, and a metal stapler at the first woman. News Asia reported that he once threatened to kill the woman. Audio and video files of some of the attacks that took place in the company’s offices have been uploaded to the Internet.

The court found some mitigating circumstances. The court said the court described “such volatility and lack of restraint as detracting from his ability to perform his professional duties.” “His behavior was egregious, which included prolonged instances of physical and verbal abuse…and severe threats.” She also said that eight examples of lack of self-control in just over a month constituted a pattern of misconduct.
