Box office: ‘Downton Abbey’ sequel debuts at number two for ‘Doctor Strange’

‘Doctor’ is still around, as the latest Marvel movie continues to lead the box office against some very fit competition.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” added another $8.5 million to the box office gross on Friday, bringing its cumulative total to $318 million. Meanwhile, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” is expected to end this weekend with $18 million,

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the second spin-off from the beloved UK series, grossed $1 million in previews Thursday from 3,300 theaters. But the weekend estimates won’t be enough to shake off “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is looking to top the domestic box office charts for a third weekend. Director Alex Garland’s horror movie “The Guys” also kicks off this weekend, but it looks like he’ll get a small start with just $423,000 off 1,800 screens during Thursday previews.

The first “Downton Abbey” movie, released in 2019, grossed more than $190 million at the global box office. While the COVID-19 pandemic may make matching those numbers unrealistic for “A New Era,” the movie has already made $29 million since its overseas opening on April 29. Directed by Simon Curtis, “Downton Abbey” stars many favorite stars including Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter and Phyllis Logan as they travel to the south of France to uncover a mystery.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era” was critically acclaimed, with a certified new score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. diversePeter Debruge described the film in his review as an “enjoyable audience reunion”, writing that the film feels like an “affectionate group hug”.
