‘Love Island’ 2022 gets extended care duties protocols

ITV and Lifted Entertainment confirmed today that the 2022 “Love Island” cast will receive expanded sponsorship protocols and provide comprehensive training.

Season 8 of “Love Island” will air this summer (pictured above: Season 7 contestants).

The inclusion training, to be delivered by the Black Collective of Media at Lion Man Athletic, will cover diversity, equity and inclusion consultant Hayley Bennett, disability specialist Shani Danda and broadcaster Sean Fletcher, language on “disability, gender, race, behaviors and micro-infractions,” according to ITV.

It will be presented to the participants before they enter the villa.

And ITV confirmed that in the meantime, welfare measures will be taken “before, during and after filming”. This includes psychological support, social media training (including how to deal with abuse on social media) and financial management training.

ITV’s extended service protocols come after the show was rocked by three deaths in three years: former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis died by suicide in 2018 and 2019, respectively, while the show’s host, Caroline Flack, committed suicide in 2020.

(A “Love Island” spokesperson previously confirmed this diverse Neither the Gradon investigations nor the Thalassitis reported that “Love Island” contributed to their deaths and in both cases some time elapsed between their appearance on the show and their death.)

ITV has implemented new sponsorships for the show ahead of Season 5, in 2019. These processes are reviewed and updated regularly.

Despite this, the show continues to generate controversy. Last year, the dating show was the subject of a record 25,000 complaints to broadcast regulator Ofcom when two contestants were in a heated fight after they were shown clips of each other flirting with and in some cases kissing other contestants.

However, “Love Island” was still a profitable cow for ITV, as the seventh season finale brought in a record number of viewers for the show.
