AAPI Emmy Contenders: ‘Squid Game’, ‘Pachinko’, ‘Saturday Night Live’

We shouldn’t just celebrate AAPI’s representation in May, as the artistic contributions of our global talents have produced some of the best TV and movie productions of the past decade. However, as we near the end of the annual celebration, it’s worth noting the multiple contenders vying for the Primetime Emmy nominations.

Netflix’s “Squid Game” rocked the streaming world, becoming the most-watched series in the platform’s history. However, with universal acclaim, it’s frustrating to feel that the show isn’t a lock to sweep the board through its qualifying categories. Of course, you can trace that back to the competitive landscape, including ‘succession’ and ‘classification’. However, it is already striving to make history as the first non-English series ever to be nominated for an Emmys.

Looking at Apple TV+’s “Pachinko”, another critically acclaimed international series, however, it feels like a far-reaching take on names outside of the literal categories, despite the popularity of Oscar-winner Lee Min-Ho’s sensationalism with South Korean star Lee Min-Ho and Academy Award winner Yoh Jung. Yun (“Minari”). We should have space for more than one non-English series in the conversation, but as the field of television becomes more and more extensive with the increasing number of content, it is difficult to stand out in the crowded field.

It’s no secret that the people of Asia Pacific are not well represented in Hollywood, either in cinema or on television. Research from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that 44 films had them from Asia or the Pacific Islands in a lead or co-star role, 14 of which were titled by Dwayne Johnson. In addition, only six of the roles were cast by AAPI women, and none of them were over 40 years old.

In the television landscape of the Emmy season, there seems to be a much more important set of options for members of the Television Academy to consider in acting categories when filling out their ballots.

The good news is that we have a field of actors and actresses that can fill almost any given lineup, even beyond the dozens of names listed.
