Jason Momoa Western ‘The Last Chase’ sells global rights to Saban

Saban Films secured worldwide distribution rights to Jason Momoa’s upcoming western “The Last Manhunt”.

Featuring a largely American cast, the film follows the true story of out-of-town Willie Boy.
In the year 1909, when a famous murder sparked the Shakespearean tragedy, Willie Williams accidentally shoots a smitten father after a wrongful encounter. With President Taft arriving in town, a local sheriff leads two Native American trackers seeking justice for their fallen tribal leader.

The story is based on the oral history of the Chemehuevi tribe. Christian Camargo directed the production of On The Roam from a script by Thomas Pa Sebet, who penned the story with Momoa. Additional “Determined Women” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” star cast include Lily Gladstone, Martin Sinsmere, Maine Kenimaka, Zane McClarnon, Raul Max Trujillo, Brandon Oakes and Tanto Cardinal.

Saban is due for a November release. Producers include Martin Kistler and J. Eric Lassist. The executive producers are Jenny Boss, Michael Aserno, Dan Clifton, Stacey Kennedy, Brian Andrew Mendoza, Sibit and Momoa. WME Independent represented the filmmakers in the deal, with Jonathan Saba negotiating for Saban.

The company previously collaborated with Momoa on the 2018 movie Braven, Saban’s biggest hit.

“We are thrilled to be working with Jason again, particularly on ‘The Last Manhunt,’ a story about a distorted culture. As Jason noted, ‘The true story of Willie Boy was never told, and it’s a beautiful story,’” said the president of Saban Films, Bill Bromley.

The directors added, “The truth of Willy Boy’s story lies in the overlooked voices of the desert dwellers who have inhabited it for generations: Chimewe. To them, Willie Boy was not a savage killer, he was just a man who fell in love with a woman who wasn’t meant for him. As filmmakers It was important to us that this complex narrative and how Native Americans portrayed the audience accurately be told. With unrepresented cultures coming to the fore in film and television, we were committed to approaching this original tale with the utmost respect for the cultures it represented. We found in partner Saban Films The ideal and credible one to shed light on this true and tragic story of the last Western hunt, and free the morale of this story.”

Momoa is currently filming the final chapter of the Universal ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise, and will then appear in the superhero sequel ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’. Saban’s upcoming roster includes Anna Lisa Amirpour’s Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon starring Kate Hudson and John Jong Seo, Brett Donohue’s “Old Way” western starring Nicolas Cage, and Adam Segal’s comedy Chariot with John Malkovich.
