‘Madley Dipley: The Diaries of Alan Rickman’ hits shelves in October

Henry Holt Publishers have announced that they will release “Madly Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman,” a collection of Rickman’s handwritten memoirs, on October 18.

Rickman wrote his diaries with the intention of future publication, and by the time of his death in 2016, it totaled 27 volumes. Now, his collection has been edited into a single volume. The diaries paint a profound portrait of a famous actor, political activist, avid traveler and loyal friend.

Starting in the early 1990s and keeping it for the rest of his life, the diary offers new insight into a man’s mind. All in his unique voice, Rickman separates the extraordinary and the ordinary with great depth and intimacy.

The book’s introduction contains an entry from Kate Winslet, Rickman’s co-star on “Sense and Sensation” and “Little Mess.” Rickman’s widow, Rima Horton, wrote the closing speech, chronicling life after Rickman’s last diary in December 2015.

Rickman, best known in the United States as the villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard, has played a variety of characters in popular films across many genres, including “Truly, Madly, Deeply,” “Galaxy Quest,” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Sweeney Todd: The Devil’s Barber on Fleet Street, Love Actually and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. His portrayal of Professor Severus Snape’s complex in every Harry Potter movie made the British actor a household name.

Rickman died on January 14, 2016 in London at the age of 69. The beloved actor was fighting a quiet battle with pancreatic cancer before his death.
