Kakao Entertainment Unveils Adaptation of Hit “Solo Level” Hit Webtoon

Kakao Entertainment, part of Korea’s tech group Kakao, confirmed Monday that it will produce a movie version of “Solo Leveling,” a hit website.

The picture will be produced on her behalf by Japanese A-1 Pictures (“Sword Art Online”, “The Seven Deadly Sins”, “Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Eraser” and “Your Lie in April”) directed by Nakashiji Shunsuke. The music is to be recorded by Sawano Hiroyuki (“Attack on Titan”). Some media described it as a serial, but in an email to diverse Kakao Entertainment described the adaptation as a “film” and a “film”.

The property was originally a web novel written by Chugong in 2016, before being developed as a web series written by h-goon with art by Dubu, CEO of Redice Studio and D&C Webtoon, and released by Kakao Page in 2018.

This action fantasy novel follows the adventures of main character Sung Jinwoo in a world constantly threatened by monsters and the forces of evil. In his battles against these forces, readers watch Song – dubbed the weakest Hunter among humans – transform into one of the most powerful Hunters in existence.

The online series has attracted more than 14.2 billion cumulative views worldwide, and has been particularly successful in Japan, Thailand and the United States. It is noted not only for the plot, but also for the amazing art that brings the movement to life.

“Solo Leveling” was also released as NFTs. The role-playing game is currently being developed by Netmarble.

Kakao Entertainment reports that about 220,000 fans have petitioned for a feature film using change.org. A copy of the film is scheduled to be delivered in 2023. Kakao has not revealed all distribution channels although it has been reported that Crunchyroll will release the film online outside of Asia.

“If someone tells me this web novel will become an animation [film] “When I first started writing it six years ago, I would not have believed them,” Chojong said in an attached comment. “I’m really excited about this, and I can’t wait to see Sung Jinwoo and his friends come to life.”

“It seems that it was only yesterday when we first discussed the possibility of this adaptation. Words cannot express how moved I am by what is happening,” said photographer Dubbo.

Kakao Entertainment was founded in 2021 from the merger of Kakao Page and Kakao M.
