Dominique Boutont returns as CNC chief despite indictment

Dominique Boutont has been appointed by the French government to take up a second term as president of the National Council of Cinema (CNC) despite the fact that he has been accused of alleged sexual assault and could now face trial.

Buttons, a former producer and financier who was appointed head of CNC in July 2019, is known for his close ties to President Emmanuel Macron, who was recently re-elected for a second term.

Buttons are under an official investigation into the alleged sexual assault of 22-year-old Goodson over a year ago. In April, the Nanterre Public Prosecutor’s Office requested that the Boutons case be referred to a criminal court after a 14-month investigation. A judge is now expected to decide whether Buttons – who has been under investigation since February 2021 – will face trial. According to AFP, the attorney general’s office has ruled out the attempted rape charge but kept the sexual assault claim. Although the bottons were indicted, the government, which supports the commission, allowed the bottons to remain in office.

Under his leadership, CNC launched a series of workshops aimed at training all industry professionals against sexual harassment during filming and in the work environment. The program began days before Buttons was accused of sexual assault and attempted rape.

More is coming.
