‘DC League of Super-Pets’ Beats ‘No’ in Box Office

After a slow July in the movies, “DC League of Super-Pets” is on the rescue.

Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Animation Comedy Comedies May Not Be Wrapped Up The month is a big hit, but it will at least manage to lead the domestic box office charts. Over the weekend, “DC League of Super-Pets” is aiming for $25 million to $30 million when it opens in 4,300 North American theaters, which should be enough to get rid of Jordan Peele’s “Nope” as the movie The first in the country. Peele’s UFO, which opened last weekend to $41 million, is expected to drop nearly 60% with $15 to $16 million in its second year outing.

Movies aimed at family audiences have been a mixed bag at the pandemic-era box office, with Universal’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” grossing $300 million domestically so far, and Paramount’s Paws of Fury $14 million domestically. In terms of brand awareness, “DC League of Super-Pets” falls among those films; It’s not a sequel to a hugely popular series like “Minions” but is based on Marvel lore so it’s not entirely new to fans. The film cost $90 million to produce, so it would need to resonate with young children (and comic book lovers) to become profitable.

Directed by Jared Stern, “DC League of Super-Pets” features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Kate McKinnon as the four-legged friends of the Justice League members. The film has received positive reviews, with miscellaneous Owen Gleiberman writes, “The plot…plot. Busy, frenetic, and planned. But there are enough wild card moments along the way, like the one involving a kitten with the voice of a baby coughing hairball bombs.”

In far fewer theaters, Focus Features “Vengeance,” a true-crime-inspired black comedy from Alum BJ Novak. With the R-rated film playing in less than 1,000 locations, it aims for low single numbers—about $2 million—in its first appearance at the box office.

Novak, who also wrote the script, portrays a New York City journalist and broadcast official traveling to Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was casually dating. Boyd Holbrook, Dove Cameron, Issa Ray, and Ashton Kutcher complete the cast.

Reviews of “Vengeance” were mostly free, with critics praising its humorous out-of-water fishing. Gleiberman described the film as a “fantastic directing debut,” adding that “Revenge” is an irresistibly original work—a long, witty tale, as witty as it gets, grounded in the real world enough to hold you. “
