Server-side updates have become a popular way for developers to test changes in a controlled manner. Many people download beta apps for proprietary software. So server-side changes act as a foolproof way to choose the number of registered users and other factors. This way, companies release the same app globally, and publish changes remotely for users’ choice. Twitter is notorious for using this testing mechanism, and its Mac app is the latest victim of a server-side flaw.
A few hours ago, several users – myself included – were banned from the Twitter for Mac app. When someone launches the app, it crashes instantly, even before they discover their window. This bug appears to affect all versions of macOS, including Monterey And the Ventura, because the error is in the Twitter app itself. It’s possible that the company made a change that was bugged remotely – causing the app to crash instantly.

It’s unclear if this erroneous server-side change affects everyone or a specific group of users. Given that many of us are reporting this online, we can expect the company to address the issue sooner rather than later. In the meantime, you can either apply Steve’s fix or use the desktop web app.
