“Star Trek: Lower Decks”: Jack Quaid in the “Strange New Worlds” crossover

brake alert: The final question in this interview involves a spoiler for the season three finale of “The Boys.”

“I love Boimler,” “Star Trek: Lower Decks” star Jack Quaid said of his lovable miserable character Brad Boimler. “I love him so much.”

Quaid’s third season in which he voices the Starfleet logo was announced on Paramount+ Thursday, but as Quaid and co-star Tawny Newsome (who voices Ens. Beckett Mariner) announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July, both actors will get the roles In live broadcast – It first happened in the second season episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in 2023. The actor explained to diverse How the episode was possible, why is Boimler so proud of in the third season of “Basements,” and how his character in “The Boys” will react to the big reveal in the season three finale and what he did to the cast of “The Boys” sub-series “Gen V.”

What do you do to get a Boimler vacuum when you record a show?

I think I’m just listening to Mike McMahon talking about Star Trek. His enthusiasm for the privilege is so infectious that it definitely rubs you off. Boimler is constantly on the lookout for all things Starfleet the way Mike talks about all things “Star Trek.” So you’re stepping into that environment by nature. Other than that… I make my voice a little louder, and it kind of pisses me off. I’ve always wanted to play football like him on a show like this. I’ve been obsessed with animation forever. I honestly love expressing it. It holds a very special place in my heart. And it was really cool to have the live version of him in the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” crossover.

So you’re playing a live version of Boimler, don’t you express it?

Let me just clarify. So, Tony Newsom and I play live versions of Mariner and Boimler. We are coming to “strange new worlds.” We are coming aboard the Enterprise. I won’t go into the plot details of exactly how this happened. But we have to be in the physical group. We should already be in the bridge, transport bay, and trails. We had to go all over the ship and interact with these amazing actors. There are some animated elements in the episode, but it’s not like Roger Rabbit where there is, like, an animatronic Boimler following Pike in the hallway. it’s not like that.

So how did you feel when you suddenly reincarnated Boimler, and as a follow-up, is your hair purple?

Oh it’s purple. Definitely purple. We made sure of that. Yes, it was really cool. This was an interesting challenge as an actor to take in something I normally do with just my voice but then chop every bit of it. I studied the way animators and artists presented Boimler, his movements, and some of the little gestures he would make. I tried to get as much of that into the loop as possible, but I tried to do things [that] It was fairly large, and very lively in a live action environment, but still kept it within Boimler’s action range. This was an amazing challenge. But I think the real shooting was a blessing [“Star Trek: The Next Generation” star] Jonathan Frakes as director. It’s just a myth, and he totally succeeded in it. He runs a lot of “Star Trek”, and just to get Riker to tell you what to do – if Riker says you’re on the right track, you probably are. So this was just a dream come true.

So it was a dream for you and maybe it was also a dream for Boimler. win / win.

Oh, it was a file big Boimler’s dream. Very dead, in fact, considering that Boimler really likes Riker and comes to work with him on Titan, Jonathan and I have worked together and he’s a really good friend now. This was just the best.

I gather that episode came together because of a conversation I had on the set of “The Boys”?

Yes, there is writer David Reed who has worked on “The Boys” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” And he just came up to me and said, “I love ‘basements.’ How can we have a live show ‘Star Trek’?” I’m like, ‘I was going to do it in a heartbeat. There’s no resistance for me.’ I thought this could always work. It wasn’t necessarily the show that I thought would be the intersection point, because they don’t really happen on the same schedule. But I really loved him. I really liked incorporating this old era of “Trek” with us from the future so much. So I like to combine these two timelines. You’ll see how this all works in the Weird New World episode. But it’s cool because from Boimler and Mariner’s perspective, they know about Captain Pike, Spock, and Uhura. They think they are all great. So it was a fun way for them to somehow meet their heroes. I’m excited that I’m actually talking about it because I had to keep it a secret for so long. This crew out there in Strange New Worlds is awesome. Ethan Beck and I had an epic affair – I just want to say that now.

Boimler was a proud male on ‘Lower Decks’, but it looks like he’s starting to assert himself more in season three?

He’s starting to gain more confidence, maybe overstepping the bounds, but he’s still a Boimler. This is the season when he will be bold, no matter the consequences. I’m proud of my man, Buimler. I really. He’s come a long way since season one.

Most people first saw you in “The Hunger Games” as Marvel, one of District One’s massive and terrifying tropes – unlike Boimler and Hughie from The Boys. How has this progress been for you?

I never thought my first role in the movie would be a vicious child killer in a dystopian future. I never thought this would be where my career went. I feel Hughie and Boimler are closer to who I am as a person than Marvel are. But I like to play different types of characters. As you know, I had the opportunity to play a completely different type of character in “Scream” recently. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to experience so many different types of characters.

You are about to start shooting the fourth season of “The Boys”. Will you ever sign up for “Gen V”?

Not at this point. I haven’t really talked about it with anyone, but I’d love to be. I can actually talk about this now, because it was happening when I was shooting “Strange New Worlds” in Toronto, and it was just as the “Gen V” team started production. So I took them all out to lunch one day. I got to know a group of them. they are great. They are very talented. They are so wonderful. I can’t wait for this show to come out. I wish good luck for them. They will kick him out of the garden.

[SPOILER ALERT] In the third season finale of “The Boys,” we learn that the butcher has a general basis to live on. How do you think Hughie would react to the idea of a world without a butcher in it?

Oh man, I mean, we have to find out, but that wouldn’t be good. The butcher is like his best friend and an older brother. That’s pretty devastating news, when Hughie found out but we’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out. I haven’t read all the scripts for season 4 yet. I really dont know. This is my time to be a fan and let things come to me and genuinely interact with them as I read them. But I was really happy with the way the writers are writing everything for this upcoming season.
