Beta “Sisi”, “Atlantic Crossing”: the global reach of land sales

Munich-based Beta Film, one of Europe’s largest truly independent television film groups, has been licensed by PPCW Media for Hong Kong and Macau International Emmy Award-winning “Atlantic Crossing”, starring Kyle MacLachchan and Sophia Helen.

PPC Media also acquired Alejandro Amenábar’s original Movistar Plus+, with Stanley Tucci and Clarke Peters, a story of piracy, courtroom battles and historical justice between the United States and Spain.

To reach more outlying places, Beta has also shut down Mongolia with Hulegu Media, on “Sisi” a blend of sex, politics, and the charming period of RTL, Beta, and Story House, a modern mentality that takes on the movie icon.

In other headline-grabbing deals when it comes to the outback, “The Portofino Hotel” — described by The Times as “a high-profile, elegant affair” by The Times, the old drama, topped Natascha McElhone as a 1926 Italian hotel owner. Riviera – Now sold by PETA to New Zealand and South Africa.

The deals come as Beta has sold the Seychelles public station “My Little Sister” produced by Vega. Botswana BTV has over 200 hours of content topped by Andie MacDowell-starrer “Cedar Cove” from Orchard Road and Hallmark Channel.

The Seychelles, Botswana or Mongolia don’t usually make the headlines. In fact, they usually don’t make sales lists at all. But their sales hold a bigger point.

This series has not only moved to the four corners of the earth, but also been widely sold to major customers. Atlantic Crossing has closed 75 regions, including the United States/Canada (PBS Masterpiece), Australia (SBS), Italy (Rai), Spain (Movistar Plus+), Germany (NDR/Magenta TV Telekom), Austria (ORF) and Israel (Hot).

Taking into account the 2021 Mipcom Canneseries series, Sisi is licensed in more than 100 regions, among them Italy (Mediaset), France (TF1), TV 4 (Scandi), Latam (STARZ), Spain (Disney), NPO (Netherlands), Central and Eastern Europe (VIAs) and Australia (SBS).

The original First Hallmark “Cedar Cove” channel acquired 130 territories, including clients ProSiebenSat1 (Germany), Channel 5 (UK) and TF1 (France).

La Fortuna’s territory currently stands at 65, including HBO for Nordic and Central European countries, Sky Germany and SBS Australia.

An Eagle Eye production for BBC UKTV and Britbox, Hotel Portofino has generated sales in 55 territories on all five continents, from PBS Masterpiece Prime Video to Britbox, Sky Italia, all Scandinavian public broadcasters and Sony in Portugal.

One of the biggest plays of global talent that live streamers offer is, rightly, their global reach.

Super Indie champions who do it the traditional way, each region separately, can still license as many or as close as possible worldwide. But that doesn’t mean they’re giving new outlets the cold shoulder. Ironically, one of the sales drivers now is the insatiable appetite for new VOD services for players as well as regional deals with global OTT operators.
