Oscar Chances “Inspection”: Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union

Bath and shower stalls from the Marines and flashlights under the sheets include “The Inspection” from the A24. While animated drama can grab the attention of progressive Academy members, others may find the honest subject too frustrating.

As Ellis French, Jeremy Pope took the lead in directing and writing Elegance Bratton’s debut The Inspection, which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday. Inspired by true events, A24 is a pop show and packed with “Oscar-worthy” scenes. We’ll see how the circuit handles the movie, as Bob will battle bigger names like Hugh Jackman and Colin Farrell for recognition.

Standing proudly next to Bob is the best turn in Gabrielle Union’s career as a French mother, an anti-gay prison guard who can’t accept him for what he is. She’s airing a bit of an Oscar-winning role as Mo’Nique in Precious, and with proper support, she could be a contender for Best Supporting Actress.

I was particularly impressed by Raul Castillo as one of the training instructors, who provides an emotional boost after some atrocities. After “We the Animals” gave him an Independent Spirit nomination, we hope a performance like this will bring him closer to a win.

The Inspection tells the story of a French, gay black young man who decides to join the Marines after being rejected by his mother.

Lachlan Milne’s cinematography takes cues from other LGBTQ dramas like “Moonlight” (2016), but might be too subtle to make noise in this category.

We’ll wait to see where he lands in the prize races. With the A24 at the forefront of the ‘whale’ and everything everywhere at once, this can be challenging.
