Amazon’s ‘Dead Ringers’ draws product theft suit

A producer has filed a lawsuit claiming she was denied credit and compensation for her role in developing “Dead Ringers,” the upcoming Amazon Prime video show starring Rachel Weisz.

Renee Tapp has sued the production company, Morgan Creek Entertainment, accusing it of violating its contract by buying the project to Amazon.

The series stars Wise as a gynecologist’s immoral twin. It is based on the 1988 David Cronenberg movie of the same name, in which Jeremy Irons appeared in the main roles.

In the lawsuit, Tapp claims that she came up with the idea of reversing the gender of the main characters and including Fayez in the project. Tapp claims that she and Morgan Creek entered into a facility agreement in 2014, under which she will serve as executive producer on the series.

According to Suit, Tab had a “deep history” with Cronenberg and was aware of Weisz’s passion for the material, and that she had done important work in developing the idea. It alleges that Morgan Creek turned around and sold the project to Amazon without its knowledge.

Amazon announced the project in August 2020. Playwright Alice Birch who has adapted the movie “Normal People” is writing and executive producing. The show is expected to start sometime in 2023.

The lawsuit alleges that Tapp reminded Morgan Creek of its attachment to the project in a letter in September 2020, but the company quickly rejected its claim.

Tab is operated by Sentient Entertainment, and her production credits include “Feud,” “Maps to the Stars,” and “Peppermint.”
