Tracee Ellis Ross on becoming a Disney Legend, beyond ‘Black-ish’

Tracee Ellis Ross is busier than ever despite the chapter on “Black-ish” being closed. The actress, producer, entrepreneur, and CEO’s focus has shifted toward a slate of projects including the Hulu/OWN/Onyx documentary collective series “Hair Tales” (produced through production company Joy Mill Entertainment), voicing the main character of the MTV animation Daria – spinoff movie “Jodie” and podcast release “I Am America”. In addition, she is celebrating three years since the founding of her hair care company Pattern Beauty.

During her main conversation on miscellaneous The Entertainment and Technology Summit presented by Citibank National, Ross explained how to keep all of these different activities in ‘harmony’.

Ellis Ross said, “I seek not balance because it is impossible, but a sense of harmony.” diverse Senior Entertainment Correspondent Angelique Jackson. “One of the biggest things I do is do my best to consciously walk from point A to B. So instead of rushing between everything, it actually creates more space in my day. It requires martial precision. I have a calendar that’s just set.”

She added, “I’ve discovered that I’m not a meticulous manager. When I trust the people around me – and I have extraordinary people around me – the things they do, that’s their expertise.”

A few days before the summit, Ross was inducted into the Disney Legends Hall of Fame. In her powerful speech at that event, she noted that “the worldview of black women is not flexible in their ability to see us broadly and see our joy.” She’s made it her mission to take part in the tournament and create content that changes that.

“This word is a legend, it is a big word. And so I had to think about it beforehand what that meant to me.” When I think of people [for whom] This word sounds apt, I think they are people who help others feel more free and the world to be safer. The truth is that Bow Johnson felt legendary in that she was a black woman on TV who was thriving, not just alive, full of joy… which was the most important part of me and a really intentional part of Bow Johnson’s gameplay. “

Ellis Ross added, “She’s been living to the fullness of her life as a wife, a mother, a doctor, all of those things with joy and fullness. It’s something really important to me and I’m intentional in terms of the roles I do, but then [also] He made writers and producers responsible for these things.”
