Meta Quest v44 update brings improved video features to creators

A new update, version 44, is rolling out to Meta Quest owners. The update will contain new advanced video settings aimed at empowering content creators and giving them more flexibility with their content. However, the new settings will not be available by default, and creators will need to go into the experimental settings to enable them.

Once the new experimental settings are enabled, content creators will be able to access a variety of features related to recording footage from their VR goggles. One common problem with VR footage is that it captures the user’s movements. So if the user is bobbing or shaking their head, this will also appear in the video. Now, the creators will have access to an image stabilization mode that will provide different degrees of stabilization. While this is a great idea, in practice it might not be a good thing, the more stability added, the less field of view for the shots.

Moreover, users will now also be able to choose the aspect ratio they want, and shoot 16:9 videos horizontally, 9:16 vertical videos, and 1:1 aspect ratio as well. Additionally, frame rates can now be chosen, but as a warning, higher frame rates will affect application performance. Those looking to get the best quality videos from their VR sessions will be happy to know that Meta has added a way to set the compression quality for videos at different bit rates, with a higher bitrate with higher quality but an increased file size.

Meta also introduces new parental supervision tools that prevent teens from accessing developer mode. This will prevent any unauthorized apps from being installed on the Quest headset. Moreover, Quest will improve the App Unlock feature which has been added in the v40 update. From now on, parents will now be able to lock multiple apps with a single PIN. Additionally, parents will also be able to lock or filter apps based on rating categories.

The Version 44 update is currently rolling out to the Quest and Quest 2 headphones. If you’re interested in trying out virtual reality, you can buy the Quest 2 starting at $399.99.

Meta Quest 2 is an entry-level VR headset that can function as a stand-alone unit or connected to a computer.
