Born in Hemet, California on January 19, 1962, Jeff William Van Gundy was raised in Brockport, New York, the son of a former college basketball coach. Jeff played the point guard at Brockport Central and was a two-time pick at All Greater Rochester in 1979 and 1980. Van Gundy attended Yale University but transferred twice before graduating from Nazareth College where he continued to play basketball. He began his coaching career in the mid-1980s, coaching a high school basketball team in Rochester. He then worked as an assistant coach at multiple colleges, including Providence College and Rutgers College.

New York Knicks

New York Knicks appointed Jeff Van Gundy as assistant head coach on July 28, 1989. He served in that capacity for the next six and a half years under coaches Stu Jackson, John McLeod, Pat Riley and Don Nelson helped the team win three Atlantic Division titles during the playoffs each year. He became head coach in 1996, and the team was very successful under him, consistently making playoffs and advancing to the Conference Finals and even the NBA Finals.
