Jerry Calajian dead: Intellectual property group director dies at 68

Literary director Jerry Calajian, a partner in the Intellectual Property Group, died of cancer on September 9 at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California, aged 68. The IP group confirmed Calajian’s death.

Throughout his career, Calajian has served as agent, director, and producer, forming close links with literary agencies around the world. His career has been marked by love and passion for authors and their books, championing their literary voices whenever he can.

Like many of the most prestigious books adapted for film and television, including “Life of Pi”, “The Book Thief” and “Big Little Lies”. He also represented a long list of producers, directors, literary talents and screenwriters during his tenure.

A frequent visitor to Sydney, Australia, Calajian was known as an avid traveler, having attended for over 30 years the London Book Fair, Toronto, Cannes and many other film festivals. Professionally, he has been described as an intelligent and wise counsellor, in addition to being a dear friend to his peers.

Calajian was born in Detroit, moved to the Los Angeles area in 1974, and worked as a waiter before starting his Hollywood career at the Diamond Talent Agency with Abby Greshler. Later, he became a talent agent at Herb Tobias & Associates and a performing arts agency. After the APA, Kalajian formed a partnership for a new literary agency called Becsey, Wisdom, Kalajian. Finally, he teamed up with Larry Becky and Joel Gottler to found the Intellectual Property Group. The three worked together for 20 years at IPG, alongside partners Leslie Conliffe and Brian Lipson.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday. Instead of flowers, IPG asks for it Donations It is sent to the Scripps Health Foundation to support the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.
