Busan New Currents Awards: Participation Awards “A Wild Roomer” and “Shivamma”

The Korean film “A Wild Roomer” and the Indian film “Shivamma” have been announced as winners in the New Currents competition, the prestigious Discoveries section of the Busan International Film Festival.

“We were particularly sensitive to the lightness and subtlety of the director’s vision of his characters. The competition jury said of Lee Jeon-hong’s “A Wild Roomer,” with its innovative cinematography, that it creates original cycles between characters within the home, and builds a very contemporary world.”

“We appreciated the originality and the sharpness with which the director was able to tell this very contemporary story. Here documentary and fiction meet in an organic and vibrant way in the film industry. The generosity of the actors and viewers creates an affinity with this universal story that Jaishankar Aryar,” the jury said. It takes place in an Indian village.

“A Wild Roomer” has also won a NETPAC Choice Award by a group of film critics, a KBS Independent Film Award, a Critic b.

The judges of the new Jiseok competition – choosing from films by the most famous filmmakers – also awarded two prizes.

Iranian director Haji Mohaghi’s “A Scent of Wind”, which was the festival’s opening title, won the Jiseok Competition, shared with Yalkin Tuychiev’s “Alteration”.

The awards were announced Friday morning at a press conference in Busan.

In the final work report, released at the same time, festival organizers welcomed a return to normal in-person activities after the previous two editions were severely disrupted by COVID-related obstacles. The number of foreign visitors to the festival increased from 69 in 2021 to 1,694 this time, in addition to 4,700 registered Korean participants. The number of spectators reached about 161 thousand, representing 74% of the full capacity.

In the accompanying industry division, operating under the Asian Contents and Film Market banner, there were 2,465 registered badge holders, representing 1,102 companies from 55 countries and territories. This was a 12% increase from 2019, when the ACFM was last held as an all-in-person event. Among the vendors, there were 72 kiosks representing 272 companies from 22 countries.
