OG Scream Writer on whether the franchise can really last forever

at first ScreamJimmy Kennedy Sidney Prescott’s Randy Mix warned, “This is the moment the supposed killer comes back to life, for one last scare.” And even though The Last Girl assured us that it won’t happen in her movie, Franchise refuses to die. The chain has held up, with fairly high-quality chains being produced since 1996 (except for Part 3. We’re not talking about that one or Roman). But how long can the franchise continue to renew itself and stay relevant? According to the film’s original writer, Kevin Williamson, it will likely run forever.

While attending the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, Kevin Williamson sat down for an interview collider to discuss his latest horror movie, illness. Then Talk turned to the beloved franchise that helped launch horror icon Wes Craven. The screenwriter said this when asked if the series could go on forever:

yes. At first, I might have thought the opposite, but now since I’ve been proven wrong over and over again, and that last scream has been a pleasure – I think one of the great things about Scream is that there’s a different killer in every movie, while more often than not, you know, Halloween and Friday [the 13th]There’s Jason, there’s Michael, and there’s Freddy; They do not go away. Ghostface changes with every movie and so we have a chance to change the motivation and change the story, and we can always twist and transform it. It was supposed to be kind of a game-changer all along. So the trick is, how do we keep changing the game? I think this is the new team I’m working with [is] Fabulous. They are so amazing. They are wonderful human beings. They are talented, and it was a pleasure to be a part of this new system.
