India’s Dharamshala Festival returns as a personal event

Two years after the pandemic forced the internet, the 11th edition of India’s Dharamshala Film Festival is back with a physical copy.

Highlights include the premiere of India’s Cannes Jury Prize-winning film and Pakistan’s entry to the Academy Award, director Sim Sadek’s ‘Joyland’ and Pope Francis’ documentary ‘In Viaggio’.

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Dharamshala is internationally famous as the seat of the Dalai Lama, who has settled there since his exile from Tibet in 1959. Festival directors Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam are filmmakers in their own right. Their records on the Tibetan condition, including 2005’s “Dreaming Lhasa,” “The Sun Behind the Clouds: Tibet’s Struggle for Freedom” and 2018’s “The Sweet Requiem” have received major play at festivals, including in Toronto and San Sebastian.

Indian highlights include Venice Aditya Vikram Sengupta and El Gouna’s nickname ‘Once Upon a Time in Calcutta’. Winner of Parth Saurabh San Sebastian “Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar” (“On Either Sides of the Pond”); Rento Thomas and Schmidt Senn 2022 Academy Award nominee, “Writing with Fire”; Sundance Chunak Sen and winner of the Cannes Film Festival “All This Breath”; and selection of Ajitpal Singh’s Sundance “Fire in the Mountains”.

“Tukdam: Between Worlds”

Looking at the festival venue, the hot ticket title is “Tokdam: Between Realms” (Finland/Ireland/Estonia) in Tibetan by Donagh Coleman in English, who has previously played in Galway and Helsinki and is exploring a form of Tibetan meditation that preserves the body. after death.

In all, the festival will screen 80 films from 32 countries, including 21 feature films, 16 feature documentaries and 43 short films.

The festival will take place at the Tibetan Institute of Dramatic Art, McLeod Gang, Dharamshala, from 3-6 November. A digital version of the Dubai International Film Festival 2022 will be published online from 7 to 13 November in a shorter lineup.
