Sony, Nisr Tariq Bin Ammar photo ink distribution, co-production charter

Italy’s leading independent distribution company Eagle Pictures has signed an important agreement with Sony to distribute the studio’s films in Italy, as well as to co-produce European and international films.

The deal expands on Eagle’s previous agreement with Sony Corporation regarding the distribution of Sony titles on home entertainment platforms. Starting next March, the banner will address the distribution of all Sony films in Italy.

Eagle, headed by French-Tunisian businessman Tariq Ben Ammar and headed by Andrea Goretti, has also struck distribution deals with Paramount Pictures International, MGM, Warner Brothers and Lionsgate.

Eagle and Sony have already co-funded two major productions, “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile,” a New York set family movie with Javier Bardem that has already grossed over $30 million in the United States and over $50 worldwide; Antoine Fuqua’s “The Equalizer 3” with Denzel Washington is currently entering its fourth week of shooting in Malta, near the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Sony was able to take advantage of the lucrative Italian tax credit to shoot the film on location with a local crew and hired Maite Bulgari Garbo Produzioni to handle local production.

The agreement will also allow the worldwide distribution of selected Eagle films by Sony, for example “Dampyr”, an Italian horror and fantasy film by Riccardo Cimilo co-produced with Bonelli Editore.

While the Italian box office received huge success due to the pandemic, Eagle was able to maintain its leadership as the primary independent distribution banner in Italy through the second quarter of 2022. The company notably released “House of Gucci” and “Top Gun: Maverick” in Italy.

Eagle also recently completed its acquisition of Studios Paris, the massive studio facility on the outskirts of Paris that has hosted footage of the Netflix movie “Emily in Paris” and “Murder Mystery” with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler, as well as “The New Look,” the Apple series on Christian Dior and starring Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel. The facility has nine acoustic stages spread over 120,000 square feet.

On top of its European alliances and partnerships with major US companies, Eagle is also a shareholder in Spyglass, along with Andy Mitchell’s Lantern Asset Management. Eagle Pictures also boasts a library of 2,800 titles.
