Which one is right for you?

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 series includes two models: Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: Price and Availability

You can get any of the watches through the Samsung website, along with most third-party retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.

The 40mm version of the regular Galaxy Watch 5 starts at $280, while the 44mm variant costs an additional $39, starting at $310. The Pro model, which only comes in one size, will cost you $450, making it the most expensive watch in the series. All of these watches are a bit more expensive than the 2021 models, but you also get some noteworthy upgrades for the price difference.

For those curious, Samsung is still selling the older Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic models. The Galaxy Watch 4 is now $200, while the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is currently $379 for the 46mm variant. Both held up very well into 2022, so it might be worth considering if you don’t mind dropping some features. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, in particular, is more attractive because it sits in the middle of both the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, also with its rotating bezels.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: Specifications

Before we get started, here’s a quick look at all the specs to see what each of these smartwatches brings to the table:

Quality of design and build: couldn’t be more different

Although they belong to the same family, the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro look very different from each other. This is because they are available in different sizes and use different building materials. The regular Galaxy Watch 5 model comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, while the Pro model is only available in 45mm. This is one of the main reasons why the Pro model looks better than the vanilla Watch 5.

In terms of design, the Galaxy Watch 5 looks similar to the regular Galaxy Watch 4. Samsung used the same aluminum casing as the previous generation model, but there’s a new sapphire crystal glass on top of the screen which makes it more durable.

Both smartwatches use Sapphire Crystal Glass on top of the display for added durability.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro comes with a stronger titanium case, which means that it is one of the most durable smartwatches. The Pro model also has a raised bezel that keeps the screen from scratching or scratching easily. You don’t get rotating bezels on any of the new Galaxy Watch 5 smartwatches, but the raised bezels on the Pro model will give you a similar look if you’re concerned. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro also has a sapphire crystal glass on top of the display, so it’s a complete package for the outdoor enthusiast with an active lifestyle. Both smartwatches are IP68 + 5ATM certified, which means you can wear them while swimming or take them to shower.

The regular 40mm version of the Galaxy Watch 5 weighs 29 grams, while the 44mm version weighs 32.8 grams. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is much heavier than both models, at 46.5 grams. While the regular Galaxy Watch 5 model comes in silver, graphite, sapphire (44mm only) and rose gold (40mm only), the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro can only be purchased in other colors of titanium black or titanium gray.

One thing we really like about the Galaxy Watch 5 series is that they all use the same 20mm straps. They don’t use proprietary bands like the Pixel Watch, so it’s relatively easier to find alternatives. You can explore our collection of the best Galaxy Watch 5 bands or the best Galaxy Watch 5 Pro bands in case you need new bands for your smartwatch.

Internal hardware: couldn’t be more alike

The Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro look very different on the outside, but they share the same internal hardware components. Both Samsung Exynos W920 smartwatches use 5nm, the same chip used inside the Galaxy Watch 4. It clocked 1.18GHz inside both watches and is paired with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. So despite the price difference, you won’t notice any appreciable difference in performance. The same is true for the health sensors used inside both the smartwatches as well.

The Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro look very different on the outside, but they share the same internal hardware components.

Both smartwatches in this comparison include accelerometer, barometer, gyro sensor, geomagnetic sensor and ambient light sensor. Additionally, you also get more advanced sensors such as those that can measure heart rate, heart electrical signal, and body mass composition. There is also a new infrared temperature sensor to take your body temperature measurements. The fact that you get all these sensors is amazing. The only Galaxy Watch 5 Pro exclusive feature missing on the regular model is Find My Way Back, a hiking-specific guidance feature.

In addition, both smartwatches also run on OneUI Watch 4.5 based on Wear OS 3.5. The software experience is also identical on both watches, so you don’t necessarily miss out on anything on the software front by buying the cheaper watch. In fact, Samsung will also support both devices with software updates for up to four years after launch.

Battery life and charging: The Pro model will last longer

If both watches have the same internal experience and identical software, what is the real difference between the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro? Well, the Pro model has a larger battery than the regular Galaxy Watch 5, so it will last longer between charges. The 40mm version of the regular Galaxy Watch 5 model comes with a 284mAh battery, while the 44mm model has a larger 410mAh unit. On the other hand, the more profitable Galaxy Watch 5 Pro model has a larger 590mAh unit.

The Pro model is definitely the one to choose if you prioritize battery life.

Both smartwatches offer the same hardware and software experience, but the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will last longer before the battery needs to be topped up. We got the equivalent of 3-5 days of use with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro on a single charge. The regular model will be on its knees by the end of day two, so the Pro model is definitely the model to choose if you prioritize battery life. Both smartwatches support 10W wireless charging, but you’ll need more time to fully charge the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro due to its larger battery.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 vs Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: Which Should You Buy?

The Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are practically the same in terms of hardware and overall features. You can track your workouts, sleep stats, and even notifications the same way, no matter what watch you choose. The extra $170 you pay for the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro over the regular model gives you more durable build materials, a slightly larger screen, and longer battery life. So the decision to buy is up to your personal preferences. If you care about these extras, you should buy the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. We would say the Pro model is more suitable for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. This is where you’ll need more durability and longer battery life. This is also where the hiking guide feature comes into the picture.

The Pro model is more suitable for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who spend more time outside.

For everyone else, the regular Galaxy Watch 5 model will do just fine and provide more value for your money. The screen on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a bit larger, but it also makes the entire watch appear larger. It may not look good if you have a small wrist. We wish Samsung would offer it in a smaller size, but that’s unfortunately not the case. As for durability, the flannel Galaxy Watch 5 is still great for most users thanks to the Sapphire Crystal glass on the display and the armored aluminum case. Sure, the extra battery life on the Pro model might be tempting, but ask yourself if an extra day’s use is worth spending the extra money.
