Luminary Podcast: Konkona Sen Sharma Launched in India

Actor and director Konkona Sen Sharma (A Death in the Gunj) will join the likes of Dave Chappelle, Lena Dunham and Russell Brand as podcasting platform Luminary launches a Hindi unit.

Originally launched in the US in 2018, Luminary operates a premium podcast platform that addresses its subscriber audience with “smart and entertaining content”. The company says its move to India will see it “expand its content legacy” and that it will “develop and curate local stories with global appeal”.

Sen Sharma, who recently starred in Aparna Sen’s The Rapist, will voice the Barefoot Boys, a retelling of one of India’s greatest sports stories. The podcast will recreate the untold story of 11 barefoot Indian footballers who defeated a trained and experienced British team during a match in 1911.

“The tale of the Barefoot Boys is timeless. It will stand the test of time even 100 years from now. Such is the strength and courage of the story. I am honored to tell this story, as a Bengali and even more so as an Indian,” Sen Sharma said.

Entrepreneur Masaba Gupta is also among the first components of Indian networking. She will host the podcast “How I Musaba” in which Gupta will be seen in conversation with female entrepreneurs, art and creatives.

“I’ve always been interested in the backstories of badass, shitty women. This will be really special because I get to talk to women who inspire me every single day! Expect a non-preaching, honest, crazy exchange of ideas, stories, and even incidents,” Mosab said in pre-made comments.

“India is an important growth market for podcasting, storytelling, and luminary. Our programming blurs the lines between podcasting and art, and we’re excited to bring this unique approach into one of the world’s richest and most dynamic cultures. There are stories not It is bound to be revealed in India, and we look forward to telling it through a premium, subscription-based model that entertains and uplifts.”

India is the third largest consumer of podcasts with 57.6 million listeners per month, according to data from PwC’s 2020 Global Entertainment & Media Outlook report.
