BBC Studios buys stake in Little Ax producer Turbine

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, has taken a minority investment in premium scripted independent production company Turbine Studios.

Turbine is the UK-based company behind global hits such as “Small Axe” (BBC/Amazon), “Munich: The Edge of War” (Netflix), and “Uprising” from writer-director Steve McQueen.

It was founded just in the year 2020 by Andrew Eaton, Tracey Scofield, Justin Thompson, and David Tanner. But in its short history, Turbine has racked up a slew of accolades: ‘Small Axe’ is the most BAFTA-nominated series of all time. The Uprising also won the BAFTA Award for Best Reality Series.

Her latest project, “Constellation,” is an eight-part conspiracy-based psychological thriller written by Peter Harnes and starring Noomi Rapace (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Prometheus”) and Jonathan Banks (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul” ).

The value of the deal and most other details of the agreement were not disclosed. However, the deal includes German sister company Turbine Studios GmbH, a joint venture between Turbine Studios, Daniel Hetzer and Matthias Braun. Turbine Studios Germany specializes in original development and production services for the European market. Turbine was advised by Tom Manwaring of Helion Partners on the deal.

Turbine Studios has an enviable reputation in our industry. Mark Linsey, Director of Script at BBC Studios, said their focus on creating exciting, concept-driven drama, and the franchise, is matched by their ability to attract world-renowned talent from behind and in front of the camera.

“We are proud to join such an inspiring team and look forward to delivering a slate of innovative and ambitious projects using our comprehensive combined experience,” Turbine Studios said in a prepared statement.
