Production for Season 2 of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” is in full swing, and regular Sophie Nelis says Showtime’s goal is to get more graphic and heartwarming. And she knows that’s quite an accomplishment, considering the series opened with a gruesome sequence of cannibals.
In anticipation of the show’s highly anticipated return, expected to air in early 2023, “Yellowjackets” held a screening of its season one finale at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood on December 1, followed by a Q&A session moderated by miscellaneous Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis. Stars Christina Ricci, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, Sophie Nelis and Sophie Thatcher all took to the stage to smash the show’s opening run — and set the stage for what’s to come.
“There are scenes in the second season that are filmed, to say the least, and I remember doing that, and [the cast] They all sat down and looked at each other, and we were like, “What the hell are we doing. Like, literally, what the hell are we doing,” Nellis, who plays teen Shauna, said during the session. The scene in TV before.”
The series, based on William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies,” follows a high school girls’ soccer team who are stranded in the wilderness after their plane crashes on its way to the nationals. Scenes of the team members as teenagers are intercut with current footage of those who escaped as adults.
“The first two scripts I read for season two, I was audibly gasping,” said Christina Ricci, who plays the adult Misty. “I didn’t think it could get any more intense and wild, but it does… I was reading to myself, panting in private.”
The first season chronicled the history of the Girls’ gradual decline into darkness as the number of survivors in their group dwindled and the natural elements conspired against them. Season 2 is driven by a similarly slow build-up, Nellis said, which begins to pay off in the season’s sixth episode.
“When I read this particular episode, I remember freaking out,” Nellis said. diverse. “Episode 6 — it gets intense. I read it, and I was so excited, and then I immediately cried. I was talking to my psychiatrist, and I was like, ‘I can’t do this, I’m not good enough for this,’ and I was panicking.”
When viewers last saw Shauna, she was a few months pregnant and had just witnessed the death of her best friend. Season 2 resumes with Shauna at the core of its narrative, and featured both Nélisse and Lynskey – who plays the adult version of Shauna.
“This is my favorite tagline for season two: It’s Sophie Nélisse’s season,” Lynskey said during the panel. “The whole young cast is so amazing — every single one. But they’re really asking Sophie a lot this year, and she can do that. She can do anything.”
As for what fans of the series can look forward to in other storylines, Lewis hinted that Natalie’s character’s story has been significantly flipped. Previously established as fiercely independent and an excessive drinker, adult Natalie spends season two grappling with newfound sobriety and a desire for affection: “She’s a season two lover,” Lewis said candidly.
Cypress, who plays an adult Taissa, added that viewers can also expect on-screen revenge on her character’s thirsty ego. At the end of the first season, Taissa’s family begins to learn about her strange habit of sleepwalking, which jeopardizes her marriage and custody of her son.
“You’ll see more of Tai’s other character,” Cypress said with a sly grin.
Co-creators and writers Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson are at the helm of production once again, and Daisy von Schirler-Meyer is directing the first two episodes of the upcoming second season.
