Gandhi, Roosevelt, Luther King Jr. Families Unite for Descendants

Families of historical figures including Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr. take part in a new documentary series from the collection “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” by Cineflix Productions.

Entitled The Descendants, the new series will have exclusive access to the Gandhi, Roosevelt, Churchill, and King families, who will share private collections of archival material and untold intimate stories.

This outstanding four-part documentary anthology will explore what it’s like to “honor and uphold” the legacy of global icons through the perspectives of their direct descendants.

Executive producers include JC Mills for Cineflix Productions as well as Valerie LoCascio and Anne Kenny. Gandhi will also serve as an executive producer.

Each loop will be directed by a relative of the token:

• Gandhi: The great-granddaughter of Amrita Gandhi, writer and TV presenter, will introduce viewers to members of the Gandhi family, including her grandsons Gopalkrishna Gandhi and Rajmohan Gandhi and modern-day descendants charting new paths, such as Medha Gandhi.

• Eleanor Roosevelt: Great-granddaughter Tracy Roosevelt will examine how the International Declaration of Human Rights drafted by Eleanor Roosevelt influenced her life as a lawyer specializing in international dispute resolution.

• Churchill: The Churchill family will retrace the British Prime Minister’s steps through Blenheim Palace, Chartwell, the Churchill War Rooms and the Houses of Parliament, while also addressing Churchill’s influence on recent recipients of the International Churchill Society’s Sir Winston Churchill Leadership Award.

• King: Nephew Isaac Newton Farris Jr., Senior Fellow at MLK’s Center for Nonviolent Social Change, will interview King’s immediate family members, review recently restored archival footage and photographs, and present the center’s current activities that carry on the legacy of the conflict’s resolution.

“Our goal is to tell timely stories, and ‘The Descendants’ hits every note,” said JC Mills, president and chief content officer at Cineflix Productions. “We live in a world facing unprecedented challenges with a lack of global leadership.” Churchill and King are legends who left an indelible impression, and we hope our documentaries will remind audiences of their legacy and inspire viewers to stand up for what they believe in.”

Executive Producers LoCascio and Kenny added, “These are personal stories that can only be told by family members who have grown up competing with a larger-than-life character. What was that like for them? Did they continue to promote their ancestral legacies throughout their lives and through their work, or did they choose obscurity?” It seems almost impossible to pass even a single day without encountering some word or image from Gandhi, Roosevelt, Churchill or King.”

Gandhi added, “A connection with a world icon can be remarkably strange. My heart and mind are linked to the legacy of my great-grandfather, and though we share the same DNA, my daily life is markedly different. But I think that’s the charm of it all. During this journey, I realized that there are so many precious untold stories that I simply must share with the world.”

Headed by Mills, Cineflix Productions has made inroads into the premium non-fiction arena. The company was at the Venice Film Festival with the documentary “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy,” which tells the story of John Schlesinger’s 1969 film “Midnight Cowboy.” With production and development centers in Toronto and New York, Cineflix Productions is also responsible for unscripted shows like “Property Brothers,” “American Pickers,” and “Air Disasters.”
