Unveiling CineMart’s Pick for Issue 40

The Rotterdam International Film Festival has revealed its selection of 20 feature film projects and five immersive projects for the 40th edition of CineMart, the festival’s co-production market, which runs from January 29 to February 1. Hosted in person for the first time since 2020.

Among the selections are filmmakers from Indonesia, Paraguay, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ukraine, which showcases topics such as hip-hop, immigration, and gender fluidity, as well as cowboys.

Sweden’s Plattform Produktion—the company behind Cannes-winning film “Triangle of Sadness”—returns to CineMart to present John Skoog’s “Redoubt,” a sequel to the 2014 hit of the same name, with a portrait of farm laborer Karl-Goran Persson who has transformed his home. to a fortress.

Also featuring is Kurt Odderson’s Apetown, a South African urban tale that weaves together hip-hop, graffiti, apartheid and camaraderie. Anna Zamica’s mixed documentary “Słoce”, which follows the stories of young Iraqi Kurds traveling to Belarus. In Boifriend, UK-based Jack Goessens delivers a character-driven story about gender and gender fluidity, exploring dysphoria and orgasm.

Set in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, Marta Parlator explores a Polish immigrant’s struggle between creative expression and motherhood in “Grushka,” which is also a BoostNL participant.

Many of the titles in the selection have been supported by the IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund. “Manta Ray” (IFFR, 2019) director Phuttiphong Aroonpheng presents the confrontation between a displaced immigrant and a Thai government official who burned down his house in The Burning Giants.

In Barbara Sarasola Day’s “Little War,” an Anglo-Argentine family at the foot of the Andes faces the coming Malvinas/Falkland War.

Marina Stepanska explores the lives of three generations of Ukrainian women in Think About Vera.

A young woman’s journey across Colombia in search of her brother’s lost soul is the premise of “Las tierras que te buscan” by Juanita Onzaga, whose short film “Tomorrow Is a Water Palace” is in competition at IFFR 2022.

Pablo Lamar won the Special Jury Prize in the Tiger competition at IFFR 2016 for his debut “La última tierra,” and is now showing “Remanso,” which is set in the 1970s during the period of dictatorship in Paraguay.

As part of the collaboration between CineMart and WEMW (When East Meets West), the co-production forum at the Trieste Film Festival, “When Kids Sing Hit” by Mina Djukic will have the opportunity to be presented in both markets. The project is a portrait of three friends during the last days of Yugoslavia.

Five projects comprise a selection of immersive projects at CineMart, selected from those featured on the content bar from Impulse at VRDays Immersive Technology Week. Rapper, artist and director Balogi (“Zombies” IFFR 2020) presents “Anti-Muse” – a surreal narrative that combines music, dance and scenography among the tropical vegetation of the Royal Greenhouses, symbol of the Belgian colonization of the Congo. “Gay Simulator” by Iris van der Meule is an interactive virtual reality artwork and video game, which will immerse the user in the experiences of a lesbian girl.

IFFR is set to welcome back the industry, press and audiences for a full on-site return from January 25th to February 5th. CineMart takes place from January 29th to February 1st.

IFFR Pro Awards will be presented on January 31, including the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award, the ARTEKino International Award, the Wouter Barendrecht Award and the 4DR Studios Award. A brand new award will also be presented in partnership with VIPO (Visual Industry Promotion Organization), which promotes the Japanese content industry.

The IFFR Pro Hub will open for program round tables and expert sessions from 27 January. The Rotterdam Lab Emerging Producers Bootcamp also returns, this year inviting selected participants from the two previous editions online along with new producers selected for the 2023 IFFR Pro Talk scheduled for January 30th.

New to the industry lineup this year is the Darkroom program of ongoing job offers for selected former CineMart and HBF projects, taking place February 1. Selected teams will receive expert advice and have the opportunity to present their work in an exclusive presentation. A panel of international sales agents, festival programmers, and buyers. The selection will be announced in January 2023.
