Lily Allen Defends ‘Kids of Nebo’, Says Industry Is ‘Not Parent Friendly’

Musician and actress Lily Allen has defended the “Kids of Nebo” – a term for children of famous parents – and accused the entertainment industry of causing “childhood trauma” with its unfriendliness towards working parents.

“The new kids to worry about are the ones who work in law firms, who work in banks, who work in politics, if we’re talking about real world consequences and robbing people of opportunity,” Allen tweeted. . “But this is none of my business.”

She added in response to her own tweet: “And before you come at me for being a bratty kid myself, I’ll be the first to tell you I deserve literally nothing.”

Despite the disclaimer, her tweets about it have led many to point out that Allen, whose parents are “trainee” actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, has profited from her industry connections.

Allen has appeared in two of her mother’s films, “Elizabeth,” starring Cate Blanchett, playing a lady-in-waiting, and most recently, “How to Build a Girl.” According to IMDb, her first screen appearances as a child were background roles in projects her father starred in, including the TV show “The Comic Strip Presents…”

Allen’s brother, Alfie, who is also an actor who has worked alongside his family, played Theon Greyjoy in ‘Game of Thrones’.

In response to a Twitter user who asked “Why do your parents have blue links on Wikipedia[?]Allen replied, “Because I’m a child of Nebo, and both of my parents are very talented.”

But Allen, who became famous for her music in the mid-2000s before turning to acting, went on to hint that life isn’t always ideal for the sons of entertainment industry personalities since the industry is “not very dad-friendly.” “In childhood we long for stability, love and care,” she wrote on Twitter. “We don’t care about money or proximity to power yet. Many newborns starve of these childhood staples because their parents are probably narcissistic.”

“[A]The leisure business is not very dad-friendly, for example. Walkthrough / shooting months. It can be hard to see one’s own privilege when you’re still processing childhood trauma, and a lot of these kids haven’t figured that out yet.”

The peripatetic culture and long working hours of the entertainment industry has long been a divisive issue for those with caring responsibilities, both above and below the line. Last year, the Keep Families in Film campaign was launched by Peaky Blinders star Charlotte Riley, who is also responsible for setting up the UK’s first dedicated childcare facility at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

The campaign was supported by stars including Keira Knightley, Cillian Murphy and Jodie Whitaker

Aline, who has two young children, is set to lead her first TV series next year alongside Freema Agyeman in Sharon Horgan’s upcoming UK comedy-drama ‘Dreamland’.
