James Corden fails Samwise’s Lord of the Rings test

Sean Astin’s performance as Samwise Gamgee is the beating heart of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. It’s an iconic performance for many fans, and it culminates in Astin’s powerful Mount Doom speech in which Samwise tells Frodo, “I can’t hold it for you, but I can hold you!” Suffice it to say, Jackson’s “Rings” movies would look a lot different without Astin in the role. Perhaps that’s why “Lord of the Rings” fans are so uproarious about James Corden’s recent revelation that he sought out the role of Samwise.

Corden appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and it was if the rumors are true that “The Lord of the Rings” was one of his first major movie auditions. “Yes,” Corden replied, adding that his test “wasn’t as good.”

“Everyone in London auditioned for The Lord of the Rings,” Corden said. “I auditioned for Samwise. I was doing it! Accent and everything! “Mr. Frodo!”

Corden added, “A couple of my other friends walked in, and we were all called the next day, and then we were called the next day. And then none of us were contacted after that!”

When asked if failing to get the part of Samwise affected his love of movies, Corden joked, “I enjoyed it until the last movie, and then I kind of said, ‘Oh, well, I saw this now — I should have gone see The movie “Love Actually”.

Although Corden missed out on “The Lord of the Rings,” he eventually found himself cast in supporting columns for major Hollywood studios like “Into the Woods,” “Ocean’s 8,” and “Cats.” bomb. Corden has hosted “The Late Late Show” on CBS since 2015. He will be leaving the show sometime in 2023.
