Official Vita3K releases for Android is the first PlayStation Vita emulator for mobile

Anyone want to get a Persona 4 Gold character?

We often read about programmers finding ways to run old game titles on modern smartphones by emulating the original platform. With console emulators for Android galore, it really is a great way to bring back some of your best childhood gaming memories. Moreover, emulators are key to preserving the history of video games, which is why we always find it exciting to see new emulators make their way to Android. This time, Vita3K, a popular PlayStation Vita emulator that has been available on desktop operating systems for years, has received an official Android port.

For the unaware, the Vita3K project started its journey in 2018. The developers have slowly added support for more games over the years, and now it can run many PS Vita titles (in addition to PlayStation TV) and homebrew apps on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Of course you can’t play every Vita game, but it does support quite a few popular franchises like Persona 4, Uncharted, Hotline Miami, and more.

Transferring Vita3K to Android was not an easy task. What makes the official Android port so impressive is that it is not an emulator that works perfectly without any problems from the start. It has many glitches, its current GUI needs a bit more polishing, and it certainly isn’t remotely functional for the more intense titles. Having said all that, the initial release can already use custom Adreno hardware drivers, Vulkan support, and a host of other tweaks that result in a smooth experience on the best Android phones. In short, the developers clearly want to offer a great product for Vita3K fans on other platforms.

Vita3K currently only works on 64-bit Android devices running Android 7.0 Nougat or higher, with support for Vulkan 1.0 or higher. While the project is open source and licensed under the GPLv2 license, the source code for the Android version will not be available for at least a few months. The team only offers pre-compiled APKs at the moment, which can be downloaded from the GitHub repository linked below.

It should be noted that the Vita3K team is only developing the emulator itself. PS Vita game piracy is still largely illegal. Even if you own the game card, downloading backups remains a gray area. The only legal way to make PlayStation Vita games ready for emulation is to dispose of them yourself from the physical media (or digital copy) you own.
