England manager Gareth Southgate is right to rule out Marcus Rashford and select players based on their performance

I actually think it’s a good thing that Marcus Rashford has been left out of the England squad.

If we come to a situation where people are chosen only because of their name, this is not true. Same with Jadon Sancho.

Gareth Southgate leaving Marcus Rashford out of his squad was a good decision - because it makes the players realize you're not too old for England

We had a frustrating mantra of that as England fans during the Sven-Goran Eriksson era, the same people being picked every time.

Don’t get me wrong, they were all good players, but don’t we want a team based on performance and what they do? This is what I thought it was all about.

As a result, there will be some other players now in Gareth Southgate’s squad who haven’t played well, looking over their shoulders, and thinking: ‘I need to get ahead or I’m going to be dropped too’.

This will make the jolt for the better.

Southgate explains the decision to Drupe Rashford and Sancho Walker of England

Someone like Emile Smith Rowe hasn’t played much for Arsenal lately, and he would see someone like Rashford being dropped and thinking he needs to prove himself otherwise he won’t be called up again.

The biggest thing is that no one is too old to leave England. This is how it should always be.

We have a great team and others are working hard to join.

For example, Aston Villa’s Oli Watkins, who must have thought he’s not too far away. Brentford’s Evan Toni is in this category as well.

Just because Rashford and Sancho play for Manchester United doesn’t mean they have the right to play for England.

You have others paying and it’s a wake-up call to the rest of the people who might take it for granted.

There are a lot of hungry young players.

Rashford might consider those attacking options – the likes of Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling – and think: “How do I go back?”

But as a soccer player and athlete you don’t. We tell ourselves, “When I’m at my best, I’m better than him,” has nothing to do with what Joe Bloggers thinks on the street.

There is a lot of debate about centre-back Harry Maguire. Now, I will argue who goes in front of him?

Maguire is in a better position than Marcus because we don’t have any real standout candidates.

If there were a few options in the centre-back, Maguire would be under pressure, too.

The word “Lucky” is wrong but he is lucky to have chosen it.

For me, Maguire is growing up before our very eyes. He’s taking more responsibility and taking kicks from the United fans, but I can see him growing up now.

Another position is in the goal.

I love Jordan Pickford. I love that arrogance, he is who he is. Aaron Ramsdale is having a great season, but he’s been under fire lately.

No matter what, with any of these guys, it’s always class.

You can go through dips in form and mental detachment, but class is class.

If they want to participate, they will take it back. You need that spark. It comes from within.

We tend to steer clear of naming one team, especially the one that is a long way from the World Cup in November, but Southgate needs to experiment. Get a few different names.

We know the likes of Kane will come and go, so why not see how striker Tammy Abraham does after playing so well for Roma?

Whatever Southgate’s style may be, there are plenty of variables. Which is really sexy.
