Jose Altuve “surprised” Carlos Correa, who fell elsewhere

Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa have played together on the same court since 2015. It’s going to take some new double play for the Astros.

The Correa signed with the Minnesota Twins early Saturday morning, a step too short given the short-lived star was seeking a long-term contract, scrapping the twins payroll in a business deal that sent Josh Donaldson and Isaiah Keener Valiva to the New York Yankees.

However, it was all a distraction of sorts – and an attempt to save more money – for Korea to sign a three-year, $105.3 million deal.

The Astros, like most baseball fans, woke up to such shocking news on Saturday morning. The deal itself was reported near 2 a.m. ET. Altuve found out about it Saturday night via a phone call. He wished Korea good luck.

“I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting that,” said Tov on Sunday. per ESPN. “Obviously we will miss him. He is a great player and a great person within the club. He was one of our leaders.”

Astros: Jose Altuve on Carlos Correa leaves for the Twins

Altuve wasn’t necessarily upset with Korea – he understands how the free agent market works, and it’s time for the 27-year-old to take ownership. The two have had a lot together since 2015, as Altuve was named to five All-Star teams, won a World Series Award and MVP, and won a Silver Slugger four seasons in a row from 2015-18. These numbers cannot be repeated.

“Now that he’s on another team, I’m happy for him,” Altuve said. “He’s got a great deal. Happy for him. I know he’ll play well. He’ll make the twins better. We’ve had dinner so many times. We spent a lot of time in rooms together talking about different things. That’s what I’ll miss the most.”

One of the Astros’ senior prospects, Jeremy Pena, is the frontrunner to start at Correa on opening day, per Dusty Baker manager.

Talk about pressure.
