The Brooklyn Nets, officially known as the New Jersey Nets, are made up of superstars. From Kevin Durant’s sharpshooting shot to Kyrie Irving, who has handles that have left many defenders in awkward situations. The Nets have come a long way from falling into the shadow of cross-city rival the New York Knicks. The star power of Durant and Irving alone is sure to sell arenas in any city.
With the addition of these superstars comes new fans, and many may not know that before Durant and Irving existed, and before the Nets moved to Brooklyn, the Nets were once the home of the three NBA legends.
3. Stephon Marbury on the Brooklyn Nets (1999-2000)
The Brooklyn native, Stephen Marbury, was traded with the Nets in 1999 in a nine-player deal that included Timberwolves and Milwaukee Bucks. Marbury and Timberwolves were at odds as Kevin Garnett signed a $126 million junior extension, leaving him with a maximum bid of 70 million dollars Marbury in his next decade. Between Camp Marbury who was offended by the deal and no longer wanted to be in Minnesota, he decided to force Network trade.
The Nets team was struggling. They were 3 to 15 years old to start the season and they desperately needed someone who could turn the ailing franchise around. Lewis Katz, one of the owners of the Nets, felt at the time that Marbury was the perfect man for the role, according to then-Nets coach John Calipari, in The New York Times.
“Marbury is a fighter,” he said. “He’s a warrior. He’s a leader. He’s fearless.
Adding Marbury to the nets didn’t make much of a difference. He would net 31-51 and 26-56 in the two full seasons that Marbury was part of the team.
In 2001, Marbury was traded by the Nets to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Jason Kidd. Although Marbury’s stint with the Nets was short-lived, and his tenure with the team didn’t produce the results the owners might have wanted, he managed to get average. 22 points per game The All-Stars are voted on in the NBA.
