Negotiations between the Chicago Cubs and Willson Contreras over a long-term deal look like they’re dead in the water with the latest update.
You know things are bad for the Chicago Cubs and Willson Contreras when they can’t even get to the same page before the MLB arbitration deadline. According to MLB.com’s Mark Finsand, Wilson made $10.25 million and Chicago returned with $9 million.
So, the team responded by asking Contreras for more than a million dollars? This obviously won’t sit well with the supporting star moving forward.
Cubs fans angry at front office in Chicago
This latest update from Feinsand comes with the future of Contreras completely with the club. Contreras said earlier this season that he and the Cubs had yet to discuss a long-term extension. Rumors of trade also spread.
This season will be very different for the Cubs, with Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javy Baez not on the Opening Day roster. Contreras has stayed at Wrigley Field and people across town are calling on the team to keep it around for a long time.
However, how can Chicago expect to seal a new contract with Contreras if they were to change it like this before the 2022 campaign? It doesn’t make sense and has a lot of fans blowing up the front office on Twitter.
If Contreras was upset before, he’s definitely sadder now. If the Cubs were serious about making it a priority, they would surely treat him better than this. We’ll see if both parties can get to the same page, but it doesn’t look like news of the extension is coming any time soon.
