The Next Steelers QB could be a once unimaginable choice

The Pittsburgh Steelers could look to a former division rival to become the next quarterback.

At the start of the new league year, the Pittsburgh Steelers prioritized replacing Ben Roethlisberger. At free agency, former Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubesky signed a two-year deal. Despite the contract, the team still plays quarterback, especially in the NFL draft. But can they look to the open market again?

According to Mary Kay Capote of Cleveland.com, the Steelers could “pounce” on the opportunity to sign Baker Mayfield if he is cut short by the Cleveland Browns. Cabot made these comments on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast, where you can listen to the 5:39 mark from the video below:

Could the Steelers find the next QB at Baker Mayfield?

Mayfield’s situation is intriguing, as he requested a trade from the Browns when they were chasing Deshaun Watson. Cleveland initially refused, but that all changed when they traded Watson of Houston Texans and signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract.

Reporting by Jeff Howe of Athletic He noted that Mayfield preferred to be traded and play for the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts became unavailable when they made a deal for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. Now, Mayfield is currently sitting in a proverbial purgatory, with less than a handful of teams in need of a caller-signal apprentice.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported That Brown were looking for a first-round pick versus Mayfield. It’s unknown if this will happen, considering that many teams in the NFL already have starting quarterback positions. Not only that, but Mayfield was coming off a slack season, playing through an injury to his non-fallen shoulder. That is why Brown may decide to cut ties with Mayfield.

The Steelers are facing a tricky situation in the NFL Draft, where they took the 20th pick in the first round. This could take them out of the market in favor of owner Willis or Kenny Pickett unless they trade a massive bundle of demo capital into a top 10 team to move upwards of 10 pips below the draft board.

If Mayfield is cut by the Browns, maybe we should keep an eye on the Steelers.
