It’s not just UNC that Duke is into — here are some of the reasons Duke basketball and Coach K are both terrified and hated across the NCAA.
The Blue Devils’ eternal, fierce love for Duke is rivaled by how much the rest of the NCAA members hate them. It extends beyond North Carolina, too: The Duke is widely regarded as the most hated college basketball team in all of America.
Duke fans will boil it down to one reason – envy – but in fact, the reasons why they are as varied as they are endless.
Here are some reasons why March Madness fans might get tired of seeing Duke advance through two arcs and rebel if they win another tournament.
Everyone hates roosters because they win… a lot
In sports, it is often said that no one likes a painful loser, but it is also true that no one likes a dominant winner.
No matter the sport, if a team or athlete starts winning too much, deep hatred will grow. Especially if the athletes aren’t looking stunning – the importance of training is often overlooked, and fans will revolt if a team without stellar strength defeats a superior team.
Well, that happened a lot during Coach K’s 42-year tenure at Duke, where he held a record 1201–367 and five NCAA Championships. Since 1985, Duke has 97-29 records in the NCAA tournament, so it’s likely that at one point or another they’ve been able to make enemies for new fandoms.
While Coach K is enjoying a great farewell run that isn’t over yet, there are plenty of basketball fans out there looking to play Duke without him on his head.
Everyone hates Coach K because he’s so smart and preachy
As much as top athletes are forced to confront vanity to build a team, the same exercise doesn’t always happen to coaches. When a coach is considered a genius and is portrayed as much better than his peers, there is no giving that coach a reality check how the media and self-confident sports fans pay to check themselves.
And as much as Coach K is respected in some circles, there are also cases of veteran Coach Duke who has exposed his unchecked ego over the years.

Once again, Coach K repeated the practice tradition and how it collaborates with previous teams. “Our guys really want it because it’s kind of like across the bridge to the ‘Brothers,’ you know? They can now say they did. I hope they can say that again, at least on Saturday.”
Even worse, this cultural phenomenon is apparently rooted in the kids who attend Duke basketball camp.
Dick Vitale, also known as “Dukie V”, holds a disturbing bias for the Duke
One of the most popular college basketball announcers has a reputation for expressing his love of the game—and his love for the Dukies and Coach K.
The notion that the supposedly impartial ESPN anchor strongly favors Duke is so powerful that sports journalists have tried to pin it down. In 2013, Ben Cohen of the Wall Street Journal created a scorecard using online comments to determine how much Vital leaned in Duke’s favour.
When Cohen’s research indicated that 13 percent of Vitaly’s comments favored roosters and 11 percent preferred their opponents, terrible ad They responded with their own research, featuring quotes from the Vitale brand over the years.
