Did Duke play UNC in March Madness?

Duke and UNC are just a game away from their rivalry adding another chapter in the Final Four, but have they met before at March Madness?

With the win over Arkansas on Saturday night, the Duke Blue Devils extended their March Madness and coach K career for another round as they moved into the Final Four. However, there is also the possibility of another match with UNC, their biggest rival.

If the Tar Heels can beat Cinderella St. Peter on Sunday night, they’ll hold a Final Four for the Ages match in New Orleans with Tobacco Road rivals adding an unforgettable chapter to the competition.

Given the success that North Carolina and Duke have had over the years, they’re no strangers to March Madness and the Final Four. But there’s a reason you haven’t heard anything about their previous NCAA games.

Did Duke and UNC Play March Madness?

Playing Duke and UNC in the 2022 NCAA Final Four will be the first ever meeting between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels at March Madness. Despite all the victories, titles, and all the successes, they had never met at the big dance before.

The only time the two competitors really came close to meeting in the NCAA Championship was back in 1991 when both programs reached the Final Four, but at opposite ends of the category. Duke advanced to the National Championship game but the drive-in was upset (ironically, losing to Roy Williams and Kansas).

But 2022 could introduce another piece of March Madness history by giving us this match. Either way, though, we’re seeing either a full-time version of Tobacco Road Rivalry or a legend in Coach K dealing with Cinderella all the time at Saint Peter’s. Simply put, college hoops fans can’t afford to lose in this scenario.
