We know, it’s spring training only. But Yankees player Gerrit Cole is having a hard time adjusting to the 2022 season.
On his spring debut, Cole threw 50 hits in just 29 hits, giving up four hits, and three winning runs, with 5; 1 strike to walk ratio. There was a lot to like, and a lot to improve. This includes the two home runs Cole abandoned at the end of a walk.
Cole faced his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, on Sunday afternoon in what was expected to be an easy ride to start things off with the Yankees. Instead, it was anything but.
Cole gave up two home runs – one to Deigo Castillo and one to Cole Tucker. None of the players is expected to have a significant impact on the 2022 Pirates squad, with Tucker being listed Shortstop Backup.
Struggling Gerrit Cole, MLB Twitter comes ready
While, yes, it’s only spring training, there are very few opportunities to beat a player like Cole. The moment he put pen to paper on his nine-year, $324 million contract in his last season with the Yankees, he became a target.
There was a lot going on, as it should be expected when a polarizing player like Cole does anything. Whether it’s positive, negative, or anywhere in between, fans will have an opinion.
In the meantime, get this Spider-Man more.
