After the win, Davis was overtaken by emotion during his post-match interview.

Davis, a former Tar Heel goalkeeper from 1988-92, was one of William’s assistants since 2012 until he announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. Shortly thereafter, Davis was officially named the program’s nineteenth head coach.

The Tar Heels went 24-9 in Davis’ first regular season as head coach, earning him the eighth seed in the Eastern District of the NCAA Championship. They skipped the No. 9 Marquette Golden Eagles in the opening round, took a thrilling win in overtime to eliminate defending champion and number one Baylor Bears in the round of 32 and defeated No. 4 UCLA Bruins at Sweet 16. Now, they’re headed to the Final Four with their No. 15 win St. Peter.

Davis and North Carolina head to New Orleans, where they will face the Duke Blue Devils for the first time ever in an NCAA tournament. With the win, the Tar Heels could reach the National Final for the first time since 2017 and officially end Mike Krzyzewski’s coaching career, as he is set to retire once Duke’s campaign is over.

Williams was seen cheering on his tar heels throughout the tournament, and wanted to say how proud he was for Davis for what he accomplished in his first year as head coach.
