The two teams have already met twice this season, with the Blue Devils blasting Tar Heels’ boots at Chapel Hill before North Carolina returned the favor. He spoils Mike Krzyzewski’s last home game at Duke With a 94-81 win at Cameron Indoor Stadium on March 5th. Almost a third meeting took place at the ACC but North Carolina was upset with Virginia Tech as the Hokies were on their way to the ACC title.

The historical record in the rivalry is in favor of the Tar Heels, with North Carolina having a 142-115 advantage over Duke dating back to the first inter-programme meeting in 1920. The vast majority of Tar Heels’ dominance came before the arrival of Krzyzewski, who collected 50-47 numbers record against North Carolina since taking command at Durham in 1980.
The rivalry has been fairly even over the past decade with the Blue Devils taking a 13-10 advantage over the Tar Heels since 2013, a streak that featured three ACC Championship meetings. Duke won two of those meetings, but this game in New Orleans is uncharted territory for two of college basketball’s most accomplished programs.
