UNC is the lowest-ranked remaining in the Final Four when it was 8, but is this the worst-ranked Tar Heels ever had in the NCAA Tournament?
The biggest upset remaining at the NCAA tournament was North Carolina, who entered March Madness as a Class 8 and earned up to the fourth final. The first time came back in 1990 when UNC won the first round and beat 1 seed Oklahoma to reach the Sweet 16 before falling to the Arkansas. The 2000 edition of the Tar Heels followed a similar path for this year’s team, going from the eighth seed all the way to the Final Four before falling to Florida in the national semifinals.
The only other time UNC was an 8th seed in an NCAA tournament came in 2013 when Roy Williams won its first-round match against Villanova before falling to Kansas in the round of 32. North Carolina has already had its highest level of success as a seed Eighth by reaching the Final Four and could set a new standard by leading Duke to reach the National Championship match for the first time since they won it all in 2017.
