The Atlanta Braves cast the role of a major relief pitcher in Luke Jackson, and suddenly Night Shift is reductive. What is the team’s plan to replace him?
Luke Jackson, who earned a sub-2 ERA time slot last season on The Night Shift, is set to miss an important time. The Braves put Jackson on a 60-day list of those with a UCL problem that might require Tommy John surgery, or something.
Jackson’s absence for any period of time is a blow to the Braves Bullpen, which until late this week looked like the best in baseball with the additions of Kenley Jansen and others. Now, they have to rebuild.
but how?
Brave: Possible alternatives to Luke Jackson
Atlanta’s recent addition to Colin McHugh’s characters was instrumental in Jackson’s replacement. as Dave O’Brien notes In his recent writing regarding Jackson’s injury, “McHugh had earned a 1.55 ERA in 64 runs in 2021 for Tampa Bay and joined Jackson as the only right-wing holders in the Braves core of transfer reducers, not counting Kenley Jackson.”
In a similar roster move that sent Jackson to IL, the Right-Wing Brave summoned Darren O’Day. While he’s 39, O’Day adds another dependable hand to the bull game, and that’s certainly not by accident. Over his 587 career innings, he holds an ERA of 2.53, despite missing most of 2021 due to injuries.
Expect McHugh to do the heavy lifting to replace a pitcher of Jackson’s caliber, stepping into his late turn. O’Day, if he proves he can survive, could be a consistent contributor as well.
