The Boston Red Sox failed to reach contract extensions with Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers before opening, representing an organizational failure.
Bogarts could pull out of his contract outside next season, and there’s no good reason not to turn him down, given the contract he’ll have either in Boston or elsewhere. The Red Sox star didn’t hide words when asked if he and the Red Sox had any chance of reaching a contract extension before the self-imposed opening day deadline.
Given that the Sox just signed Trevor Story, another short team, and moved him to second base, maybe they could afford to lose a talented player like the Bogaerts. But that’s a question that will be asked next season.
Raphael Devers’ talks did not go any better. Devers is under contract for two more seasons. Apparently Chaim Bloom & Company made a show, but it didn’t make much of an impact.
Red Sox: You have to wait for the extensions of Xander Bogart and Raphael Dever
Both players have stated that they prefer not to negotiate during the season, as it provides an unnecessary distraction for them and the team. If the Bogaerts has another season of All-Star caliber, he will definitely opt out of the remainder of his deal, which is set to pay him $20 million per season through 2026.
Given the focus on the short stuff market this off-season, there is more money to be made for a player of his caliber.
As for Devers, its price It will only increase from now on. His agent knows this, which is why Devers didn’t settle for a lower price.
Negotiations are sure to get tougher in the upcoming off-season. Hold your breath, Boston.
