Former Cowboys RB coach Gary Brown passes away at the age of 52

Former Cowboys coach Gary Brown, who helped shape Ezekiel Elliott’s career, died Sunday of cancer at the age of 52.

The NFL and college football lost a key member on Sunday with the tragic death of Gary Brown.

The former Penn State team that played for the Oilers, Chargers and Giants in the NFL before beginning a long coaching career with teams like the Cowboys and Browns died of cancer.

He was 52 years old.

Several football communities have gathered to mourn Brown’s death, including those where he coached and played.

Brown was the eighth-round pick for the two players in the 1991 NFL Draft. He played for Houston from 1991 to 1995, scoring a 1,002-yard season in 1993.

One year later with the Charger rushing for 945 yards, he joined the Giants and ran another successful campaign with 1,063 yards and touchdown.

He lunged for 4,300 yards and 21 touchdowns on 1,032 runs during his eight-year career.

Brown retired after the 1999 season and went into coaching.

In 2008, he worked as a coach for appearances at Rutgers Club. The following year he took a job with Brown, and remained on the cast until 2012.

Dallas named Browns as coach for appearances in 2013. Instantly, he helped bring DeMarco Murray back to achieve consecutive Pro Bowl seasons.

When the Cowboys drafted Ezekiel Elliott, Brown was there to mentor him to three Pro Bowls in his first four seasons.

In 2020, Brown was not retained by the new coaching staff and took a year off from training while dealing with his health. He joined Paul Chryst’s Wisconsin squad for the 2021 season, but had to miss the Las Vegas Bowl as his battle with cancer progressed.
