Texas Rangers fans were outraged after their attempt to get back in the extra rounds ended in a controversial slice call on Monday against the Colorado Rockies.
The Texas Rangers were hoping to extend their winning streak to two on Monday with a victory over the Colorado Rockies. They were definitely close to that.
The Texans were down 4-3 at the bottom of the ninth inning, but they were forced into additional innings after Willie Calhoun’s singles home touched down on Daniel Bard. Colorado led 6-4 to the top ten, following the RBI single from Jose Iglesias and Conor Joe solo.
At the bottom of the frame, the Rangers had two runners at the base, and it looked like Adulis Garcia was shooting in a double game, but Brendan Rodgers’ throw for first baseman C.J. Kron was wild. The referee staff reviewed the play, and determined that Texas catcher Mitch Garver had slipped illegally into Rodgers, giving the Rockies a double play and a 6-4 win.
Rangers fans angry after illegal chip call leads to extra innings loss
Rangers fans, well, they didn’t take that call well.
What makes the call so much more painful for Rangers followers is that second baseman Marcus Simien scored a run that would have cut Colorado’s lead to 6-5. But, that wasn’t the case in the end due to the replay review, as they felt Garver had slipped illegally into Rodgers.
Rangers manager Chris Woodward said in a post-match press conference that the call did not specify losing the match. However, Woodward said it was a “frustrating way to lose a match like this.”
